Older Intel RST Drivers May Block 1903 Upgrade

Here’s another new possible impediment to upgrading Windows 10 PCs to 1903. It just made its appearance on the Windows 10 1903 Known Issues list yesterday (July 25). The item is entitled “Issues updating when certain versions of Intel storage drivers are installed.” For those not already in the know, Intel RST stands for Intel Rapid Storage Technology. These drivers are intended to support RAID arrays but may be installed on many Windows 10 machines even when no such arrays are in use. Here’s what the item info looks like on the afore-linked Issues page:

As the advice indicates driver versions numbered from 15.1.0.1002 to 15.5.2.1053 are blocked.

The Fix Is Easy: Upgrade to Version 15.5.2.1054 or Newer

If you happen to use one of the drivers in the affected number range (15.1.0.1002 up through and including 15.5.2.1053), you’ll see an error message like this one when the upgrade block kicks in:

How unusual! An MS error message that tells it like it is, and points to good explanatory info as well.

Should you find yourself in this boat, you need only upgrade the driver to the current Intel version. It’s readily available at the company’s Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) User Interface and Driver web page. As I write that post, that version is numbered 15.9.6.1044 (3/18/2019 release date). The 64-bit version is around 66 MB, so it’s not overly huge, either.

For once, a relatively straightforward problem with a relatively simple fix. Bravo!
